Sio Silica Partners with University of Manitoba on Quantum-Enhanced Groundwater Monitoring Research

Sio Silica Corp. (“Sio”) is pleased to announce it has partnered with the University of Manitoba (UM) to conduct a feasibility study and experimental design for Quantum Gravimetry Enabled Groundwater Monitoring in Manitoba.

The strategic partnership between Sio and UM is to design a state-of-the-art, non-invasive groundwater observational network capable of detecting and tracking changes in aquifer health in real time. Such a system would mark a transformational step in how Manitoba stewards one of its most important natural resources—groundwater—and would provide a transparent, scientifically rigorous foundation for sustainable economic development.

Dr. Ricardo Mantilla, an Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering Department in the Price Faculty of Engineering at UM, will be the principal investigator. “My research program aims to establish Absolute Quantum Gravimetry (AQG) as a breakthrough tool for aquifer monitoring in Manitoba,” stated Dr. Mantilla. “AQGs measure tiny variations in the Earth’s gravitational field caused by changes in groundwater storage, offering a direct, calibration-independent method to assess aquifer conditions without drilling, disturbance, or large infrastructure.”

“This partnership with the University is important to Sio,” explains Carla Devlin of Sio, “as we are not only committed to ensure groundwater protection throughout our operations, but we want to be part of a larger monitoring program that will help Manitoba responsibly manage its aquifers as the Province grows, and to enable a path towards a comprehensive assessment of cumulative effects on aquifer health.”
